This 2013 documentary tells the stories of two families in Milwaukee-one black, one white-in a battle to keep from sliding into poverty.

This journalism is made possible by viewers like you. Support your local PBS station here: www.pbs.org/donate.

“Two American Families” raises questions about the U.S. economy and the declining middle class through the stories of the Neumanns and the Stanleys, which began when the breadwinners in both families lost their well-paying factory jobs. For more than two decades, Correspondent Bill Moyers documented their struggle to keep their homes, their health insurance and their dignity.

Keep sending those high paying factory jobs to China and to other Third World countries, and this is what you have: the working POOR. Our government is solely to blame for the trade imbalances and for allowing corporations to decimate American manufacturing. The ONLY person big enough to even try to tackle decades and decades of corruption was TRUMP....and look how the media treated him: did all that they could to prevent him from being re elected by this class of people who are most affected by poor policies that he was trying to change. So do NOT get on here boo hooing about "these poor people" if you continue to vote for the establishment: YOU are aiding and abetting the problem from being solved.

I'm an atheist however, I admire Keith's family and how they practise their faith. It appears to have given them all a strong moral compass and despite suffering economic disappointments, none of them descended into a life of drug addiction or crime. They stayed united as a family. Well done!

In Canada we got the universal health care bit, working families should continue fighting for universal minimum wage and the education and retraining part. NDP should consider a fare tax policy to fund universal higher education and minimum universal wage, that goes up along inflation

That is exactly why universal health care, universal minimum wage and universal free education and retraining is the only way it should be. Automation and jobs going overseas from developed countries have made corporations richer. Corporate tax should force them to rethink ....

He and his wife keep moving-on despite the hardships caused our politicians ruining this country. However, I believe Claude and his wife will one day hear, "well done good and faithful servant", which is all that matters. Praise Jesus.

I'm 41 now, but realized pretty early on that the American dream was a lie for most of us. I mean I make pretty good money now, no brag, but hearing what these folks made was appalling in some cases. Working for a company for 20 years and getting a pension is no longer so, and make no mistake that is by design.

I laugh in bitterness. The working class have no unity, no spirit, they are more into being the rich than fighting them. I cant stand what people do to themselves by being naive. Education, education, education. Without it - you really will live a life on the breadline and never get anywhere. These families are living proof (the only one in the documentary with a secure job and decent pay is Keith - the only one to graduate college). Education is the key to financial security. I come from a working class, high-school-dropout family......but went to university. Best thing I ever did. I am 50 now, I have never had to worry about money, making mortgage payments, health care etc.

Possibly the finest doc in the PBS library. Should be shown at every Republican AND Democratic leadership convention every four years, just to remind the guys in silk suits who the Real People are in the US! The two families deserve loads of praise for their persistence and courage. Everyone can see that. It’s truly shameful that over 25 years, the base wage remains stuck at $8-$9 an hr. Impossible!

Corporate America is destroying the so-called middle class. We are now the working poor. We have a former president who helped to make this a reality as one of the first bills he put forward was to help him and his 1% buddies. What really gets me are all the brainless sheep, who are also working poor, who followed him like the mindless desciples that they are. Of course many of the sheep followed him not in spite of the fact that he's a racist, but because he's a racist. After listening to what he paid in taxes, I realized that I paid more in taxes working part time in a retail store. How wrong is that?

I prey and hope the Stanley's are better now, and hopefully Terry has got back on her feet and at least moved into her own home. What strikes me (as a European living in Asia) is how their situation is made so much worse through the creation of unrealistic expectations, which result in buying houses with mortgages. In so many countries people live in similar situations, that is they earn little, there is job uncertainty, etc. But because people are not made to expect it to necessarily become better, they don't buy houses or other things things they later can't afford to pay off or to maintain. This is not to say that this is an acceptable situation. But poverty together with constant promises that it will get better right now, and with the production of an unattainable ideal of how life is supposed to be, seems even worse than just simple poverty.

This is what a problem with minimum wage not being a "living wage". This is a cause for a family breakdown, money. In addition, anyone who can not afford healthcare always ended up on government assistance. So why not make healthcare to be socialist like Canada? The Republicans and the Corporate Democrats refused to uplift the American people but rather ship the causes of labor overseas for more money in their pockets. Vote them all out of the office of National Politics!

The USA has to decide if wants to isolate itself from the rest of the word or be a strong competitor in the world. We can't have it both ways. If we decide on the latter we need to get rid of unions and students need to study 'hard" subjects again. Years ago I found myself working at a paper mill that had just been bought by the Japanese. The new owners brought in the Chairman of Sony to indoctrinate us in the Japanese way. The first point he made was to state that a country that loses its manufacturing base will die. He was so right.
