Jose Javier Flores

A lot of internet providers will almost always sell/rent/give you a gateway (they may have a different marketing name). This gateway almost always includes a modem, router, and wi-fi all in one box. So a lot of people don't understand that and assume that they just have a modem or just a router. Having the router and modem as separate devices in a way is good because if either fails, you can just replace that one unit. In addition, 3rd party equipment almost always has lot more features and functions than the ISP provided equipment which may or may not be pertinent to you.

Yeah no. Those are modem/router combo units where they integrate the modem and router into a single box. They may call it a gateway or some other marketing term. There are still plenty of stand-alone modems and routers out there.

Can I connect more than one device with only a modem and a switch (without a router), i.e., can I connect several computers to a switch and connect this switch to a modem and get internet in this way? I will really appreciate a well explained answer.

15 päeva tagasi
Jose Javier Flores
Jose Javier Flores

No. That's why you need a router. The thing is that in order to go online, each device would need its own public IP address. Most internet providers will only give you 1 public IP which means only 1 device can use the internet. When you plug in a router to the modem, the router gets the public IP. However, the router allows all of your internal devices to talk to the internet using a single public IP.

Typical home routers are usually a combo of a router, network switch, and Wi-Fi. Routers don't absolutely need Wi-Fi. Most of the enterprise level routers don't have any Wi-Fi capabilities. However, in home and/or small-business settings it makes sense for routers to have Wi-Fi built-in as it makes it easy for users to setup and use.

No. Most internet providers give you only 1 public IP address. If you plug in a computer to your modem, the PC gets the public IP address. A router that is plugged in will get the public IP address and allow multiple devices inside of your home network to access the internet through a single public IP address.

Місяць tagasi
Jose Javier Flores
Jose Javier Flores

The closest thing I can think of would be a mobile internet USB modem. However, this requires an active service and account from a cell phone provider and signal. Satellite internet would be another alternative, but it can get pricey and is usually extremely slow. Starlink should change that though.

Місяць tagasi

Amazing explanation!! But I have a question. We connect our laptops/mobile phones at home without using any cables.. I mean we make wireless connection to the router. Why does the video say that the home gadgets are connected via Ethernet cable (at 5:59)?

Місяць tagasi
Jose Javier Flores
Jose Javier Flores

Because you can connect things like computers, printers, game consoles, TVs to your router via ethernet. For most people, Wi-Fi generally works "good enough", but there are times where having a physical connection to the router is much better. This is especially true if you transfer a lot of large files regularly between devices.

I am studying for the Network+. Thank you for these videos because I am learning so much. I finally understand the difference between the devices used by the internet providers in my country. One known for telecom(uses DSL) and provides customers with a plug and play Router/Modem with a built in switch. the other company, known for cable tv. uses a cable modem but requires the customers to purchase the router separately. When they can simply provide a modem router combo. Or is there more stability using a modem and router separately than as a combo?

Omg, I'm so out of touch with technology ... So in my household there are what was described to us as " mini boxes " and the entire hse has four ( 4 ) ... These are feeding from the main modem ??? When a cable technician comes for an issue the first thing he asks for is the main box which is the modem ? Super confusing bc it's larger than our boxes hence the name mini box ... Long story short he always accesses that " main box" which I have to assume is the router ? Lol, my head is spinning ... I enjoyed the animation, great video 👍

I came to find out why i cant connect my my laptop to the cable modem while the modem is also connected to the router. I wanted a faster data rate on my laptop than what i was getting over wifi. I dont understand why it didnt work when the modem has multiple RS232 connections on it. Maybe its a setting on my laptop but i tried turning off wifi and hard wire it and i ran the trouble shooter with no solution. My router is in the other room from my office otherwise i would have just plugged it in there. Maybe one day i will move the modem to the router and use the input to the router as my network cable to me laptop.
