Land Rover 50 Year Adventure

The story of Land Rover from it's inception as a way to save the Rover company to its becoming the SUV of choice for the landed gentry.
The design for the original Land Rover vehicle was started in 1947 by Maurice Wilks, chief designer at the Rover Company, on his farm in Newborough, Anglesey.[11] It is said that he was inspired by an American World War II Jeep that he used one summer at his holiday home in Wales.[12][13] The first Land Rover prototype, later nicknamed 'Centre Steer', was built on a Jeep chassis and axles.[14]
The early choice of colour was dictated by military surplus supplies of aircraft cockpit paint, so early vehicles only came in various shades of light green; all models until recently feature sturdy box section ladder-frame chassis.
In June 2007, Ford Motor Company announced its plan to sell Land Rover, along with Jaguar. Ford retained the services of Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and HSBC to advise it on the details of the deal. The buyer was initially expected to be announced by September 2007, but the sale was delayed and an announcement was not made until March 2008. A UK-based private equity firm, Alchemy Partners, and the India-headquartered Tata Motors and Mahindra and Mahindra expressed interest in purchasing Jaguar and Land Rover from the Ford Motor Company

35 years ago I bought a series 2a light weight and have been hooked ever since, yes they smell, they leak, they’re drafty, my lightweight had gaps under the doors that packets of cigarettes fell out of (trying to help me quit), panel gaps in general are a laugh, bolts and bits were never the same on the car, both metric and imperial were used and its not that much better on my 2014 Puma, it’s still cramped and I’m a big lad, but I’m happy to live with all this, I can wind the window down (They’re electric and they haven’t broken yet!) and lean my elbow out of it, fresh air’s healthy. Land Rover Defender has more soul than most of the modern cars out there. It still makes me smile when I drive it. Which I do every day, lockdown permitting.

Land Rover's Heritage continues even today, and that makes it the best in the market, although Land Rover is building newer models using the simplest materials, it is still keeping its heritage. It might be least reliable now, but it does not mean it is its end, it only means it is the beginning of a very big improvement, which is not even far now. Land Rover's reliability is coming back one step at a time...

For a while I owned a 1952 Land Rover Defender 80 in the traditional green. It was museum registered. But I didn't use it much so I sold it to a company-offsite hunting experience company. Got the same money as I'd paid for it so that was fine. But I still miss it. Still remember the brass Made in Solihull.

The worst of it all is the year 2020 thing they call a Landrover Defender, total sacrillage! It can't be a Defender if there is no soft top version for the military. They should drop the name Defender forthwith and call it something else, like TARMAC SLOUCHER.

Colorado here. Pulled a lot of Discovery's and Range Rovers out of the mud and off the trail from 1992-2000. They were way under-powered and unreliable, expensive to operate. Lot's of different per-vehicle owners as we sold them quickly after buying. Toyota Land Cruiser and Lexus version owned the 90s, Jeep, GMC, Explorer were off-road kings back then over here. Dispite problems of 1990s, Range Rover got it right, came of age again after 2000, build great vehicles now.

@y2ktube Nice try. It's not that. I don't like being called a liar-just for offering a simple opinion, based on my own extensive experience-driving all makes of SUVs and trucks all over rough and closed 4WD trails-or no trail throughout Western US and Alaska for more than 3 decades. I'm currently driving a Audi, love the cornering in snow, not exactly a stump-jumper though. And I have an old CJ-5. My bro drives a 2019 Range Rover (traded in his Evo) in No. Calif and it's sick, maybe best on road right now, although there is heavy competition from Jeep, Mercedes and Toyota. Where I go, you don't want to drive a $50k+ ride because you will pop tires, bottom out, touch-up bumpers and scrape your sides. No hate here. Enough of that crap going around.

@y2ktube Ha! You funny man. Two of my best friends bought new, owned Rovers in 90's-for less than 2 years-because they hated them. I went on many off-road trails and drove them myself. In the 90's Rovers were the worst pile of shit cars on the market. Gear ratios were off, no power, crap falling off, they never started, differentials falling apart. Everyone knows this you idiot! Do you work for Rover? No one wanted them back then, you could buy them dirt-cheap-which is why you probably had one. Even the salespeople admitted they were dogs. You are a complete Moron. I pulled a discovery out of the sand one time with a small Chevy Blazer. Any 4WD out-performed those heavy expensive hunks of junk back then. Ford Trucks, Chevy Tahoe’s and crappy Jeeps could pull them sideways out of ditches. We used to meet up with 10-15 different trucks and SUVs at a big nasty bog in Southern Colorado. Rover always got stuck first. They were pure junk pal, and you don't know what the Hell you are talking about. Learn more, you monkey. Don't get me started on the Land Cruisers back then. To this day, those vehicles are regarded as some of the best 4X4's ever made. Said, Rover makes excellent gear now, but they had problems in the 90’s. Find a smart person and ask them.

Of the 25+ vehicles we've owned, a 1965 88" Land Rover we had on the "Big Island" of Hawaii was the most fondly remembered. We drove it from sea level (on old Hawaiian trails across lava flows) to the top of Mauna Kea (14,000 ft); on jungle paths and through the tropical rain forests; across rivers. It was all an adventure.

I had a Range Rover Vogue years ago but I was too poor to maintain it so it had to go. It was brilliant across country, really luxuriously comfortable but jeez it was thirsty and pricey to maintain. Now I have a 2.25 petrol Series 3 88” and a Defender 110 SW Puma. The S3 is fun charming and a great little truck but it’s never going to be suitable as a modern utility or family car. Times change and people’s expectations change. The Defender is just as capable off road but comfortable, quieter, more economical and faster and fully useable for any situation. If I ever had a decent windfall I’d have another Range Rover or a new Defender like a shot. They can do anything that most people would ever ask of them, in fact probably more, but they’ll do it in luxury and safely. Thank God for the original Landies but I think it’s magnificent to see how they’ve evolved. For all the officianodos there are still plenty of the Series vehicles to play with but for the rest of the world the whole range from Evoque to Disco to Defender to Range Rover open up a new world of possibilities to join the Landie club. Keep evolving Land Rover - you’re doing a great job of developing the legacy in my opinion.

They didn't even bother giving them basic corrosion protection. They were the best off-road vehicle ever but, the key word is 'Were'. Not any more and nothing to do with EU regs which Britain was a party to, every other manufacturer managed to comply. As far as the Land Rover Defender is concerned they committed sucide !

In 1979 my father towed out a brand new Land-cruiser bogged to the axles without breaking traction. It was even used to help retrieve a D8 bulldozer! We stacked 33 hay bales on her while towing 120 bales on the trailer to beat the rain(you had to lean out the door to see where you were gong). With a tarp over the custom dog crate on the back she rescued the kids from our snow bound school bus. My mum, brother and I and numerous friends learnt to drive in her. The narrator keeps saying that the Landrover is permanent four wheel drive. Well my 1955 long wheel base Landrover pickup truck had two wheel drive as the norm but you could push the yellow lever near your feet vertically which engaged four wheel drive if things got slippery and pulling the other lever next to the yellow one would give you low ratio and four wheel drive. Used it to go skiing for years. Never got stuck and people with normal cars were always keen to ride on the back when the snow got deep and slippery.

I have driven the Defender variant many times, I call it "the English Princess" due to how frustrating it can be to drive one, especially in left-handed drive configuration (as in the controls are on the left) where the driver finds him/herself far more cramped than the front passenger does. Having said that, Defender is not a bad off-roader, it's just that there are more ergonomic options with better steering characteristics available (namely Toyota Hilux)

British cars had a horrible reputation here in the States - it's not some demented nationalism thing. The old MGs? well, they were hobby cars anyway. During the 1980s and 90s in Los Angeles you could tell that it had rained, even if the pavement had dried up in the sun that followed; everywhere was a litter of Jaguars that had stopped working when it rained. What on earth was going on in the UK where they were from and where it rained all the time? (Still haven't got an answer). A Land Rover 2 or Defender? Incredible, legendary reputation even in the States where they can't be sold. The Range Rovers? Horrible, worse reputation than those old Jags, endless problems, unreliable. I'm shopping for a 4x4 now, not even considering a Range Rover - I want to get where I'm going and return home. It's kind of too bad. I remember the first Hondas, tiny little suicide toys. Five years later? 45 years later? In the States I think the off road vehicle with the best cross-over (same market as the Range Rover) is the Toyota 4Runner, a step up the Toyota Land Cruiser. The Jeep? A bit less so. Whatever happened to engineering and manufacture in the UK, the US is probably following. Thank goodness for Toyota and Honda.

I'll disagree with you about Jeep. The Wrangler managed to retain the functionality of body-on-frame, live axles, removable top and doors, and fold-down windscreen. In addition to the basic layout they added more features to make the Wrangler even more capable, e.g. in the case of the Rubicon, 4:1 transfer case gear reduction and swaybar disconnect. What I most appreciate about Jeep, is that they listen to what folks want and it shows in their sales figures. Land Rover on the other hand, never gave a shit about owner input and with the new Defender, totally lost the plot.

not many would buy their workhorses, because they were spartan and under powered. i sit next to my dad, in a 109 without seatbelts and enjoy it. a 2.25 diesel is slow but it gets you where you need to... as he has no son, i work on the old land rovers with him and hope to take on the legacy when he is gone.

well it was a good truck but they filled it with rubbish electronics that are always breaking down or just falling to work and I don't think these new models will have been cured

Blaise Morris The ones not currently on the road will just be sitting appreciating in a field somewhere! LR's of all models have been shooting up in value to the point where full restoration of wrecks is becoming financially viable.

Dropping LRs by parachute - the men hurry towards them to unpack them and get them on the road but find the keys missing ;)

As usual, fat, pampered, soft and "leisurely" Americans ruined it.

@dyer2cycle Amen brother. I don't know how our country has developed this "we know and do better than everyone else because we're Murican."

...yes..and they ruined our own Jeep as well...I am not a "fat, pampered, soft, or leisurely" American myself..I am one who would much prefer a simple Rover or Jeep with bare basics and great off-road capability...

I have several North American club events in the mid to late 80's when I was younger with a Sony Camcorder. This video inspires me to show many dedicated American club enthusiasts. Around the RR came out here and way before the disco came out. Along with some defender builds that arrived in containers way back then in the us. Stay tuned!
