Thank you for the video, so interesting to me. Didn't know exactly how this worked, never actually thought about it. Amazing engineering.

Just put a bunch of plants on board because they breath in carbon dioxide and breath out oxygen lol I wish
9 minutit tagasiŁukasz Kucharski
I dunno why, but I giggled at the idea of silent CO2 farts into the waterm. Esp. given how imporant it is, the more silent you make the farts, the more deadly you are.

I've been waiting for more submarine videos! When I was little I wanted to be a firetruck or a submarine. Yes, the vehicles, not the person who operates them.

We had OBA's (Oxygen breathing apparatus) for going into smoke filled compartments while fighting fires. I believe that It is the same principle on a smaller scale. It has been 50 years ago so I don't know if they still use them. i was in aviation.

Preheating fluid is a common motif with boiler systems. It's very efficient to add a bit of heat to inline feed lines.

He referred to two adjectives to describe Anime. He said, RICH anime and he said LEAN Anime... LEAN anime is something like Boku no Pico?

I had a friend that worked at the portsmouth naval shipyard on the reactors. he used to tap hydrogen off the reactor, put it in a trashbag, tie it off and attack a tinfoil hatch cover to it. then he'd let it go. the local air force base would send out interceptors to figure out what these weird radar reflections were..strong when the foil was facing the radar, nothing when edge on. they never found anything and the people at the shipyard had a good laugh over it...

So once the co2 is scrubbed and released in to the ocean does that mean that bubbles would rise to the surface or does saltwater absorb the co2

I get that the military prioritizes reliability over almost everything else (much like the Apollo computer), But the UI on that CAMS system looks seriously frustrating to use, not to mention how slow it was to update readings. Honestly, I'm a little surprised that they only have one backup system each for oxygen and CO2, though I suppose most of the time surfacing acts as your final backup. I do like that they are essentially passive, though.
2 tundi tagasiGanesh Karan
Great content. Enjoyed every bit.
2 tundi tagasiClint Gillespie
I love your submarine series. Almost makes me want to go enlist.
2 tundi tagasiDIY King
Thank you Dustin! Fantastic series overall, and a terrific walk-through on this topic. My boys and I loved it.
2 tundi tagasiSteven Bradley
The burning the candle to make oxygen reminds of a device I used to use in the Navy for combating fires. It was called a chemox breathing apparatus. You could put it on and still breath in smoke filled compartment and fight a fire.
2 tundi tagasiJames Huffman

had a lot of trouble understanding that Iowa guy's accent. Is that a hillbilly dialect or something ?

God this kills me to even post this question .......But here I go.......When the CO2 gets pumped over board ........it is done so as a gas ........when it filters through the seawater of the ocean.......how does it emerge at the surface , where it returns to its gaseous state?
3 tundi tagasiMrZeroHero
Def one of the coolest episodes by far. Loving this series and excited for future series. I got my dad who was a Chief Petty Officer in the Navy hooked on your videos and we talk about them after we both view them. Thank you.

Looks like that first reaction (Fe +O2) --> Fe2O3 + O (should have an extra oxygen). Looks like the free oxygen should combine with a free oxygen from the NaClO3 to actually make NaCl + 2 O2. Just say'n. The first reaction uses all existing oxygen, so I guess the net benefit is three new airborne oxygen atoms that were previously in the NaClO3.
3 tundi tagasiTheGuysGuide
I could tell this was a military ship by all the clean shaven faces, the "yes-sirs", and the fact that nobody could explain why they were doing what they were doing
3 tundi tagasiMihails Ļevčenkovs
If anyone wonder what "smell" sailors say they carry after a voyage in their clothes because of MEA, most if not all amine compouns smell of rotten fish is how I can best describe it. Would be quite a nauseous trip if it were to spill
3 tundi tagasiJeff R. Allen
"Somehow" the CO2 becomes little bubbles. Bet that's classified up the wazoo.
3 tundi tagasiLewis M
The dude in the beginning he talked to is so smart his words come out of his mouth slower then his brain processes them. I'm very happy to have people like him running sub safety for us.
3 tundi tagasiArchie The Dog
Mechanics have those sniffers but probably not as robust.
3 tundi tagasiCoop Aloop
Man I really am starting to realize why submarines cost so much money this is a fantastic series.

This was crazy interesting, and incredible that Naval leadership would approve this type of educational material being filmed, produced, and released for public consumption. Very cool! I'm wondering if you've considered videos similar to this one, but in analysis of different military aircraft? As a military and aviation nerd, I feel like a SmarterEveryDay video on military aircraft would be something amazing!
3 tundi tagasiDirk Boersma
Immensely interesting! I am glued to the screen. The questions you ask are so intelligent and help you to get more information while you are talking with the guy explaining things. Second takeaway: these nuclear boats are marvels of engineering, containing so many different technologies to make the boat operational. Thirdly the process of extracting CO2 from the air is just as exciting as generating oxygen.
3 tundi tagasiOdist Abettor
MEA is def one of those words where if I hadn't heard it said out loud and only read the word, I wouldn't have thought to pronounce it that way.
3 tundi tagasidrumermp
I had to google booper snoot after that :)
3 tundi tagasiRICK HARINCK
Clinckers sounds like the dutch word 'klinkers' which is a another word for bricks. Maybe that's why they call it clinckers?
4 tundi tagasiDavid A.Vasquez
Swamp coolers also wash air and can remove some CO2 , some VOC's, some smog,.

Once I was starting a kart motor and it won’t stop even if I stopped the air flow was this the a delta fire or am I dump
4 tundi tagasiIntrovert Airways
I bet you were not stopping the airflow, those engines definitely need air
3 tundi tagasiTinman
but i thought we don’t breath just pure O2 and that is not good for us. Isn’t it?
4 tundi tagasiBHarm
Well done sir! Again, you have raised the bar. Most interesting
4 tundi tagasiSam W
Kudos to the navy dude in the video, he knew his stuff and very genuine
4 tundi tagasiDarkNineTwo Rides
I don't know if there are any other mechanics/technicians on here, but am I the only one that thought it was cool that a multi million dollar military submarine uses the same tech that we do? Lol Us techs/mechs have refrigerant "sniffers" as well
4 tundi tagasiVonZorn
as a blacksmith, a kilinker is a lump of burnt up coal, metal and sand. its a peice of slag thats useless and is thrown away. its wats left in the forge after a few hours of burning coke.
4 tundi tagasiRoderick MacLeod
@Smarter Every Day So the candle basically lights just like a safety match. Clinker is just a common term for waste products from smelting, burning, forging, or chemical reactions.
4 tundi tagasiDavid A.Vasquez
I thought the candle might clean the air similar to lighting a match in a bathroom. That removes certain odors.
4 tundi tagasiRoderick MacLeod
Amine is what makes a submarine smell like a submarine. Even still, every boat in the fleet has a distinctive aroma.
4 tundi tagasiRoderick MacLeod
The navy also has OBAs (Oxygen Breathing Apparatus). They function the same way with an oxygen candle. Not to be too pedantic, but no oxygen was created in the filming of this video. It WAS however, liberated.
