ElectroBOOM If you really wanted to leave the 30 amps, double pole circuit breaker installed, but also protect the heater for 20 amps, you could install a 20 amps or so rated fuse holder in the wiring end of the heater with a 20 amps, slow-blow fuse.

Oh my, and i was thinking that everybody around the world were using DIN standards. Why do use rigid conductors and NEMA breakers/systems there ? Here in Brazil, every single installation using NEMA breakers/systems are being replaced for DIN /flexible conductors. Here we see a house with rigid conductors and say "thats freakin' old! Time to replace to DIN" hahaha!

You calculated the size of your breaker incorrectly. The size of the breaker should be in line with maximum capacity of the cables as mcbs are there to protect the cables and the RCD is to protec you. I. E cable can has a max of 22a use a 20a it will trip before the cable is damaged. Ha finally putting my electrical nvq into use!!

It is amazing that each country has different standard of what is important and in each country there are a lot of people saying that it is SO important that their standard code is followed, otherwise everyone will certainly die. And the people saying the code is important usually have no clue of the real reasons for them.

If the rating is 50Amps, then you have (NO ISSUES) as what is to be "RATED" is the wire that feeds it and the breaker which was correct. The fact the actual receptacle can take 50amps+ just means at a 30amp breaker "POP" situation, the outlet is nowhere near the damage rating point of 50+amps it is rated to. I think you have a bunch of people not reading the NEC codes correctly. Just because a receptacle is rated at "X 30 AMPS" doesn't mean you have to use "X 30 AMPS" if you already have or can insert "Y" 50 AMPS which can handle even more amperage. The main thing is the feed wire rating and breaker amperage rating is rated for whatever is plugged into said receptacle.. The receptacle is again, along for the ride just like the wire. For instance... If you wished to run a 6ga wire to your heater rated at 50amps-60amps instead of the 10ga wire you did run, yes the "WIRE" at 6-2 or 6-3 is rated for 60amp (MAX) breaker, by using the 30 amp breaker instead just means the wire can handle the load of the 30amp thus is (PERFECTLY FINE) and can easily handle the load, overkill yes, but perfectly fine with "CODE" again because you have a breaker rated at wire specs or "more", it's your breaker amperage mated to the appliance you wish to protect. The wire just needs to be able to handle the "AMPERAGE" said appliance pulls, and is along for the ride just like the receptacle.

Ok so, if anyone is good at electrics or anything that would be great, I went to heat up my tea in the microwave earlier, so I stuck it in, shut the door and everything was ok until I went to turn on the microwave at the plug (I'm in the UK), my right hand was on the microwave not sure if it was the metal side panel or the buttons, and I turned on the plug with my left, and I got a pretty bitching shock on both my fingers, anyone have any idea what the hell just happened? The microwave was ok to use after that, and heated my tea up alright with a couple plastic gloves, but still kinda worried about using it from now on. It was pretty shocking I guess you could say

Basically breakers are there to protect only wires and not equipment attached. Burnt wires are hard to replace and in wooden building burning wires pose a serious threat. Breakers protect wires. There are cases when you want to protect equipment too, but most probably equipment manual describes how to do it.

European (German) here. What is the name of these silver "thingies" around the wires that go from/to the outlet? It's like a protective sleeve for multiple cables. I'd like to look up if we have those too (never seen one around here) but need the name to research.

No you can not leave it 30 amps, check the cec. There is a specific section for heaters. Also if the outlet is still sharing the same breaker as the heater that is also a code violation

@wizard3z castor We don't split our transformers for two 120 V lines it don't work that way. We can use a step down we don't split. look Up in the BS7671 books

Місяць tagasi
wizard3z castor
wizard3z castor

its a lot like the uk we just split our transformer for two 120 lines but we can combine both phases and use your appliances provided they can run at 60 hertz i use a gb kettle and hair dryer. also i use your outdoor outlet and enclosure with a special home made adapter you should see the looks of pple when they try to steal my power their little plug trying to fit lol. same principle neutral, hot leg and earth. except most of our 240 appliances are balanced and dont need neutral . o and where not fannies we dont mind a little jolt and ash from plugging and unplugging no switches on our outlets and we just started to use shutters on them lol

That’s pretty interesting, every single breaker I’ve messed with usually has a set current to trip at. Let’s say you have a 20 amp breaker, if the current reaches 20 A or more, the breaker will more or less immediately trip. This might be some sort of special breaker I’ve never heard of. I even searched an educational video on the topic, the video explained that a breaker will trip immediately if the current goes above its rating, or is directly shorted. Am I overthinking this or this is just how breakers worked all along, and if that’s true then none of the breakers I’ve installed worked that way.

2 місяці tagasi
wizard3z castor
wizard3z castor

most breakers have two types of tripping an immediate rush of current like a dead short will trip an eletromagnet switch and if your gradually pulling to many amps/watts there is a bi-metal temp switch tht heats up and trips. this is a great channel explains a lot in simple terms https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5xPZNsh47E&t=428s

Why the hack are you still using these horrible connectors ("wire nuts") over there??? I live in Germany and here WAGO-terminals are the STANDARD. They aren't expencive at all, small, very easy to use and most importantly very safe. They are like 10$ for 50 or 100 WAGO's. Please try them and you will realize what pieces of junk you have been using before.

2 місяці tagasi
wizard3z castor
wizard3z castor

they perfectly fine if you twist wires first and use wirenuts as an insulator only unfortunately pple use them as a connector. i myself prefer copper crimps and plastic sleeves https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjPfasTjYTg&list=PLYyqRNzaEUGZZ0ouLVCHj1aa6YuIe5WDL&index=24 i have started to use wagos for earths and fixtures easy to remove and reuse

US/Canadian electric work is just funny compared to european xD In eastern europe "live lines" we only got in main breakers like for whole apartment block from 1980's, big fuses, you even cannot tie together two breakers. only thing better i see is that you have an metal cord saving from drilling it, we mostly use plastic

2 місяці tagasi

o dont be fooled we use mostly plastic in n.america only real craftsman will use mc but i prefer to use ridged softwall conduit (saves a ton of clips and looks neater and easier to paint)or schedule 40 pvc for underground or wet areas we have rubber vinyl coated mc for flexibility areas like connecting to appliances
